    What is Acupressure?

    Last updated 11 months ago

Many people are familiar with Acupuncture, but Acupressure is still a relatively under-represented healing modality. It has been a  fundamental part of Chinese Medicine for thousands of years but originally developed from Shiatsu, a Japanese style of Massage which uses finger pressure(Shi meaning finger, atsu meaning pressure). Using the same points as an Acupuncturist, an Acupressurist can help to:

    • Promote Relaxation and Healing
    • Reduce Muscle Tension
    • Balance the Energy Flow through the Meridians in the Body
    • Prevent Disease and Promote Wellness through Balance
    • Reduce Pain
    • Balance Hormones and the Circulatory System
    • Bring the Body back into its Natural State of Harmony

If you want to learn more about Acupressure, please give ASHA School of Massage a call at 770-368-2661 or visit www.ashamassage.com. ASHA is now offering an Asian Bodywork Therapy Program which will produce professionals with a strong competency in Acupressure, Tuina, Taichi, Swedish Massage, and much more, taught by world renowned master level faculty.

If QiGong is something that is new to you Christina has a F.A.Q. or frequently asked questions page on her website(www.therisinglotus.com), which describes it well; "Qigong is a term used to describe a large variety of meditations, exercises, breathing techniques, life habits, healing modalities, treatment protocols, spiritual beliefs and more. It includes qigong as an exercise and qigong as qi-emission therapy. Under the category of Chinese energetics that are related to qigong we also find feng shui, Chinese astrology and Taoist practices to name a few. The actual definition of qigong is “the practice of energy cultivation over time”."

In addition to the classes being held by Christina, and the available services coming to the wellness center, there will also be the opportunity to learn about QiGong and much more from the internationally renowned master level faculty in our Asian Bodywork Therapy program as a part of the core curriculum!

What are the benefits of Swedish Massage?

    Last updated 11 months ago

Swedish Massage is estimated to have been around since the early 19th century and is now probably the most common form of Massage found in the West. It is largely credited to Per Henrik Ling, and Johan Georg Mezger, who adopted the French names given to the strokes. The basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber) and vibration/shaking, joint mobilization, and energy, which were later additions. There are many good reasons to get a Swedish Massage, and a lot of benefits, for example it:

    • Improves Overall Well-being and Reduces Stress
    • Stimulates the Parasympathetic Nervous System, the state in which the body heals most effectively and efficiently
    • Reduces Pain, Muscular Strain, Tension, Spasms and Stiffness
    • For people who suffer from any type of debilitating joint disorder that causes them pain, Swedish Massage works to increase the elasticity in the tissues, flexibility, and to reduce the pain that they feel.
    • Releases Endorphins, which are mood enhancing chemicals
    • Has also been able to Reduce Inflammation after Strenuous Exercise

If you are interested in Swedish Massage and its many health benefits, give ASHA School of Massage a call at 770-368-2661 or visit www.ashamassage.com ask about our Wellness Center and Student Clinic(Where you can receive a discounted full-body Swedish Massage), Or if you are interested in learning massage for yourself, you are welcome to check out our Certified Massage Therapist and New Asian Bodywork Therapist Programs!

Three Tips for Preventing Back Pain during Daily Activities

    Last updated 11 months ago

Most of us know about the dangers of lifting heavy objects or even of sleeping on bad mattresses, but it turns out that there’s a whole host of ways to injure your back as you go about your daily activities.  To help prevent back pain, check out these tips:

    Remember to use your armrests

Interestingly enough, a lot of upper back pain is actually due to not using your chair’s armrests!  Supporting your arms really takes its toll, so if you’re not typing, then rest your arms on the sides of your chair.

    Move around.

As we all probably learned during childhood games of hide and seek, being forced to stay in one position for a long period of time can be excruciatingly painful.  So when you start dancing around in your seat, trying to work out a knot or an ache, that’s a sign that it’s past time to get up and move around a bit.

    Remember to Squat

You’ve probably heard that you should “lift with your legs, not with your back!” many times over the years, but what does that even mean?  It’s actually fairly simple when someone breaks it down for you: You need to stand with your feet far apart enough so that you can keep your balance, and then you essentially do a squat, just like you would at the gym.  On the way back up, the power of your legs will be what’s lifting the object, not your back.  This may seem counterintuitive because lifting with your legs is a lot more tiring than just picking something up in the “normal” way, but the next morning when your legs ache, it will be because you’re building muscle; your back would just hurt because you’d wrenched it.

If you’re interested in learning about how to prevent or relieve pain, then you might want to attend ASHA School of Massage.  At ASHA, you’ll attend a the only COMTA accredited school in Georgia while earning your massage therapy certification.  For more information, visit our website or call (770) 368-2661.
